Part 2

Arnie Arnesen and David Blustein
94.7% of jobs created today are short term.
The topic of discussion was on the Nature of Work, and its importance to humans’ mental and physical health. Americans miss stability and a shared sense of purpose in their jobs. The effect of the “gig” or “short term work” economy on all workers was discussed, and the subsequent effects of this on people. Many protections have been stripped from workers, traced back to Ronald Reagan who attacked unions, and caused a deregulation of protections for workers, and workers are being treated like fungible commodities Much work is outsourced and offshored. American workers have been ‘taught’ by politicians that this is the fault of ‘others’, that is, immigrants or outsiders. In addition to loss of earning power (lower wages), the gig economy has also had effects on health care coverage, and psychological effects on workers (relational gaps, length of relationships, etc. )

David Blustein is Professor in the Department of Counseling , Devvelopmet, and Educational Psychology in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. He is the author of “The Psychology of Working: A new Perspective for Career Development, Counseling, and Public Policy” and the ” Importance work in and Age of Uncertainty: The Eroding Experience of Work in America.”
