We scope out the week with Val Endress, Professor of political communication at Rhode Island College, and David Schultz, Professor of law and political science at Hamline University.
We discuss how the longest government shutdown in history helped Americans realize that government actually matters to we the people. One such task is “reining in” capitalism, by making corporations serve the people and not the other way around — through enacting rules, setting limits, and enforcing compliance.
We also talked about the tension between some people’s desire that everyone assimilate into a so-called “American” culture, versus the benefits of each group preserving their ancestors’ cultures — food, art, music, costumes, etc. — so we all can sample and enjoy a richer buffet.
