Part 1:
We talk with David Dayan, the executive editor of The American Prospect, and author of several books. We discuss the outlook for higher gasoline prices, due to the embargo on energy shipments from Russia. Because of this, We consider that lower-income Americans should benefit from an extension of the child tax credit, which would help offset the cost of higher oil prices, even though the US only gets about 7% of its energy from Russia. Better, it would be good to use alternative fuels, and other methods to end reliance on fossil fuels. However, Russia is a source for many other metals and minerals used in the manufacture of EV’s. We should also curb the opportunistic price gouging that is being perpetrated by sellers of products. Part 2: Our guest, Mel Goodman, professor at Johns Hopkins, former CIA analyst, Russia expert, about V. Putin, and his war against Ukraine. Putin, “an irrational madman with nuclear weapons” is seeking to reestablish a Russian world power. Other countries are watching the war, and wondering how the relatively overmatched Ukrainians are able to hold out and make progress. China is observing events, and is dealing with its own Covid surge. It may be a good time for the US to exert soft power by aiding China.
