We talk with Maurice Cunningham, JD, PhD, a retired associate professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Boston and the author of "Dark Money and the Politics of School Privatization." about the recent assault on public education. We discuss various sham grass roots groups, well funded by the Koch organization, and others, and how they are subverting public schools and teachers. Teachers' unions find it very hard to counter them because of the money being spent, all with one goal: to pull budgets away from public education. Part 2: A conversation with Chuck Collins, who is the Director of the Program on Inequality and the Common Good at the Institute for Policy Studies, where he co-edits Inequality.org. He is author of the popular book, Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality, Bringing Wealth Home, and Committing to the Common Good(Chelsea Green). His most recent book is The Wealth Hoarders: How Billionaires Spend Millions to Hide Trillions (Polity Books). We talk about the push to impose economic sanctions on Putin and the oligarchs who support him. However, the government has to first find their assets. It is estimated that 85% of their assets are offshore, not in Russia, but in locations in other countries, such as the US, England, and others. In the US, several states, including Delaware, South Dakota, and New Hampshire are repositories of 'wealth storage units' such as luxury residential properties, anonymous trusts, etc. There are 750 billionaires in the US, whose wealth has increased by $2 Trillion in the last 2-3 years, by profiteering and price gouging. Fifty of those billionaires have paid no estate taxes. It is important that we have the political will to stop these practices, and reform our systems.
