Part 1:
Joel Christensen is Professor and Chair in the Department of Classical Studies at Brandeis University. He taught previously at the University of Texas at San Antonio (2007-2016). He received his BA and MA from Brandeis (’01) in Classics and English and his PhD in Classics from New York University (2007) where he also received an Advanced Certificate in Poetics and Theory. Professor Christensen has been a Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies (2013) and has received the Society for Classical Studies’ Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Collegiate Level (2013). We talked with Prof. Christensen about the pandemic and its effects on us in various ways. The pandemic has unveiled the failures of social structures. Many people blame leaders, when, in fact, leaders solve or fix the problems. But, this is something we must fix for ourselves. We also talk about the despair of disease, and the changes we have all experienced. People gamble that the effects are going to be different this time. We comment of the situation in Ukraine, and how we are all connected to it. Part 2: We talk with Ben Sprague, who lives and works in Bangor, Maine as a V.P./Commercial Lending Officer for Damariscotta-based First National Bank. We discuss the uselessness of international law to prevent and to govern wars. Some of the actions of Russia are against the Geneva Convention. Where in the past, the US was insulated from distant wars, but this is no longer possible. Biden’s strategy of isolating Russia, and imposing economic sanctions seems to be working to give Russia pause, though it is too soon to tell. However, the European countries are unified in their response. We discuss the price of gasoline in the US, and how the oil companies are planning to profit by the current crisis. We talk about shaming those companies for that stance.
