Part 1:
Arthur Rizer talks to us about police militarization. Arthur Rizer is the Vice President of Technology, Criminal Justice and Civil Liberties at the Lincoln Network, and a adjunct professor at George Mason University Antonin Scalia School of Law. We discuss how militarization has happened in the police. Police have been given military equipment, weapons, and, most of all, a military mindset. This mindset is one that is contradictory: police are supposed to be peace officers, and protect the citizens (civil rights bearers) while military are trained to overwhelm the enemy, by disabling them by sometimes lethal force. That makes police who adopt this mindset view all as potential combatants/enemies. Police thus see themselves as always in danger. This leads to over-policing and under-protection. Part 2: Our guests are Jonathan Feingold and Evelyn Carter. This is episode 7 of Race Class. We discuss Stereotype Threat, an issue for members of a class that is underrepresented in the general population, and is a facet of structural/institutional racism.
