Part 1:
Dr. Garret J. Martin is a Senior Professorial Lecturer in the School of International Service. We discuss with Dr. Martin the reelection of Macron as French President. This was an election that was closely watched by people in Europe and the US. LePen, his opponent, is a far right candidate, and it was feared that her friendship with Putin would put France in an untenable position, given the current war. France has its own problems, economic and social. The cost of living, supply chain problems, and others loom large. These will affect how Macron can govern. Macron’s appeal was mostly to the older, conservative population. France needs to change. Part 2: Dr. Robert Lempert is a principal researcher at the RAND Corporation and director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for Longer Range Global Policy and the Future Human Condition. We discuss the global environmental crisis, and how transformation has to take place to avoid disaster. Dr. Lempert discusses the research being done by his group, consisting of three working groups, and what their functions are. We discuss the structural problems that are present, and how these can be mitigated. We also discuss how uncertainty can be managed and lived with.
