Part 1: Paul Kiel covers business and consumer finance for ProPublica. He talks to us about the IRS and taxes. We discuss the unfairness of the tax code, which includes property tax, which most residents pay. However, the very rich have many writeoffs, which often results in their not paying any taxes. We discuss the proposals for a wealth tax on very rich individuals. We also cover the gutting of the IRS, with reductions in the number of agents who could be auditing the very rich and their tax avoidance schemes. “If you’re getting a W-2, you’re a sucker.” Part 2: We discus with Kathryn Joyce, a writer for Salon.com, the not-so-subtle language that many far right groups use to smear and denigrate those that they want to attack. This is a way for these groups to form affiliations with each other, by their overlapping hate speech, and to thus spread their influence. By these means, they can create connections, adopt each others’ adherents, and thus grow as a larger bloc.
