Part One:Ed Gonzalez Has Spent Years Fighting ICE. President Biden Just Nominated him to Run the Agency. The Harris County sheriff has been overshadowed by more-vocal Houston officials, but he’s earned a reputation as an effective reformer. Gonzales has reversed many ICE-related practices in Texas, especially Harris County (pop. 4.5M). He is a surprising choice, but we expect he will be able to navigate Republican opposition when he is confirmed as the chief at ICE.
Bio: Michael Hardy is a Houston-based journalist and writer-at-large for Texas Monthly. His reporting has appeared in The New York Times, WIRED, The New Republic, The Daily Beast, Vox, Playboy, The Texas Observer, and Texas Highways. From 2013 to 2015 he was the arts editor of Houstonia magazine, where he won the 2015 City and Regional Magazine Association award for best arts and culture writing. Before that he freelanced part-time while attending graduate school in English literature at Rutgers University. In 2009-2010 he worked in Sri Lanka as a reporter and editor for the now-defunct English-language newspaper The Sunday Leader, an experience he later wrote about for The American Scholar.
We talk with Kevin Cope about vaccine passports, and the opposition to them among Republicans and others. We also talk about Constitutional bases for issuing such passports, despite some states' passing laws to forbid their use. This is an opportunity for the federal government under the rationale that this is a least restrictive method to safeguard the nation's health.
