Skip Tenczar's limerick in honor of the governor of Texas.
Abbott is opening up the Lonestar state,
Despite experts saying his idea isn’t great.
There’s trouble on the horizon,
Nasty variants are risin’
And Texas is near last in vaccine rate.
Part 1: We begin our discussion with Col. Laurence Wilkerson and the decision by Biden to bomb locations in Syria. Col. Wilkerson sees this action as a silly tit-for-tat response so actions by Iran-sponsored militias. There seems to be a bias in Washington towards war. We could better change our relationship with Iran by helping them with the Pandemic. This would be an opening to resetting the relationship, which was damaged by the previous administration.
We need a universal conscriptions scheme in the US to deal with climate change, administered on the pattern of military conscription, with no deferments and exceptions. Humans are clearly speeding up climate change to catastrophic effect.
Col Laurence Wilkerson was Colin Powell's chief of staff.
Lawrence Wilkerson was Secretary of State Colin Powell's Chief of Staff, and is distinguished adjunct professor of government and public policy at the College of William and Mary.
Part 2: We talk with Andrew Latham about China, and its recent history. It has been low profile up to now, but its actions are now being interpreted by many as threatening. It is now more powerful than before, wealthy, and sophisticated. The military is powerful, and has global reach. But, it also has a demographic time bomb, in the sense that the population is getting older, and because of the one-child policy, also suffers a shortage of women.
Andres Latham is a professor of international relations at Macalestar College. He specializes in courses on international security in the Indo-Pacific region and the World Wars.
