Bio: Jonathan Guyer is managing editor of The American Prospect. He has written for Foreign Policy, The New Yorker, Harper's, Le Monde diplomatique, and Rolling Stone. A former fellow of Harvard's Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, he is writing a book about political cartoons and comics in the Middle East.
We discuss what seems to be a common pattern in Washington. Every former policymaker in Washington is an academic, a researcher, or an adviser to big business. Although most of those individuals are not classified as lobbyists, they are not transparent about what they actually do: they advise on policy, and, in effect, are selling access to power, and looking forward to doing so after they leave their government jobs.
Part two: We have a conversation with Matt Stoller about corporate monopoly power. This includes tech companies, and the effects of their activities on all aspects of commerce and the lives of the populace. We discuss the recent Suez Canal mishap with the ship that didn’t fit, the poor performance of Google search, and other large fails. We talk about the weakness of efficiency.
