Californian Harry Partch, born 1901, a choreographer of sound-magic, created not only the music but the instruments that made the music. Daphne of the Dunes was conceived in the 1950’s, originally as the soundtrack of Madeline Tourtelot’s film WINDSONG. It’s played here by Harry Partch and others on a 1972 recording. Partch’s instruments include the
adapted viola, played by Harry Partch.

Hungarian Ethnomusicologist and composer Bela Bartok wrote his 5th String Quartet in 1934. It was played for the first time in 1935 in Washington DC. It’s played here by the Novak-Quartet.
