This week, Barbara Kolb. Extremes for flute and cello Brent Miller. Koans for cello and voice Iannis Xenakis. Metastasis for orchestra Brooks Frederickson. Breathing Bridge for A/BDuo, flute and percussion Leonard Bernstein. Excerpts from Mass Telemann. Sonata for Viola da Gamba re:Write by Andrew Rodriguez, played by A/BDuo. Rodriguez spent 3 years as a punk/hardcore/metal guitarist and songwriter with the band Close Your Eyes, his projects now range from acoustic contemporary classical to electronic music, and producing full legnth collaborations. The performers, A/BDuo, I heard when they performed in the area during their residency at Boscawen’s Avaloch Music Center.
Selections from the Missa Super “Maria Zart”, a 15th century mass, by Jacob Obrecht. The Prague Madrigal Singers conducted by Miroslav Venhoda. West Virginia native and venerable master of 20th and now 21st century avant garde piano composition, George Crumb composed his MackroKosmos, Volume I, twelve fantasy pieces after the zodiac, for amplified piano, in 1972 for pianist David Burge. Later, he composed Volume II, making it a 24 fantasy pieces, like other groups of 24 piano pieces. Interestingly, I noticed an annoucement of a New York concert performance of this piece last year in which it is listed as a piano-four-hands piece, played by two pianists. David Burge plays on this 1974 Nonesuch recording. |
